Photography Podcasts

Who would have imagined twenty years ago that an audio platform could be one of the best ways to explore and learn about a visual medium like photography? And yet it’s true. Here are a few of the podcasts I’ve found most rewarding over the years. Perhaps one lesson of so much listening is the ability to articulate one’s process and intentions as a photographer can be one of the most important skills a photographer can have. Do you have some podcasts I haven’t mentioned that have inspired you? Let us know, along with a favorite episode or two.

Real Photo Show

Real Photo Show is photographer and photo educator Michael Chovan-Dalton’s long-running (since 2015) podcast. Most episodes are interviews with established and emerging photographers - a few are with people involved in the photo community in other capacities like curators, publishers, or fellow educators. Michael is a cheerful and empathetic interlocutor, and this is invariably an interesting listen. He brings a good energy and a good ear to every conversation.

Photo Work: with Sasha Wolf

Sasha Wolf describes her show Photo Work as a ‘talky-feely’ version of her book Photo Work: Forty Photographers on Process and Practice. If you have an interest in using photography for artistic expression, the book is essential and the podcast an animated and engaging companion to the written word. Extra bonus: Michael Chovan-Dalton is the show producer, and helps Sasha introduce each episode in the amusing repartee that opens the show. Photo Work podcast.
